The shooting renewed debate on social media and beyond about whether the Confederate flag should be displayed, and whether politicians should continue to defend it.

Dylann Storm Roof was charged Friday with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, the Charleston police said. The charges could lead to the death penalty.
